Covid pandemic : Next three weeks crucial for Sri Lanka

The next three weeks are crucial for Sri Lanka due to the coronavirus pandemic, Army Commander General Shavendra Silva warned.

He said despite an island wide travel restriction having come to an end at 4 am today, people have been cautioned to leave their homes only if necessary.

General Shavendra Silva said the health authorities are currently racing against time to normalize the rapid spread of the new variant of the coronavirus which was now airborne.

Therefore, he called on the public to strictly adhere to the health guidelines and to refrain from violating the travel restrictions.

The Army Commander called on the public to cooperate with the authorities and help contain the spread of the virus.

He reminded that a night time travel restriction will be enforced from 11 pm to 04 am daily, from today until the 31st of May.

General Shavendra Silva further said the National Identity Card (NIC) system has been implemented from today, and will be in place till the 31st of May.

Apart from those required to report to work and those engaged in essential services, the public have been urged to strictly adhere to the NIC system. (NewsWire)
