Five men wanted in connection with the incident of sexually abusing a 17-year-old schoolgirl in the Hanwella area were arrested today (22nd), Police said.
According to the Lankadeepa newspaper, One suspect had surrendered to the Hanwella Police Station through a lawyer this morning. After questioning him, the other four suspects were also apprehended.
The investigation was launched after the Hanwella Police received a complaint that the schoolgirl was reportedly sexually abused yesterday (21st) while returning home from meeting her boyfriend.
According to the complaint, she was forcibly taken on a motorcycle by five individuals who came in motorcycles, to a crematorium under construction in the Jalthara area, where the incident occurred.
Police further stated that the arrested suspects, aged between 21 and 24 years, are residents of the Nawagamuwa area in Kaduwela.
The victim has been hospitalized, and the suspects are scheduled to appear before the Homagama Magistrates Court tomorrow (23rd).
