Sri Lanka and Maldives have discussed the enhancement of cooperation in the employment sector during the Maldivian Foreign Minister’s official visit to Sri Lanka.

Foreign Minister Ali Sabry has requested the Maldives to reconsider the limits placed on outward foreign currency remittances to benefit Sri Lankan migrant workers in the Maldives.

He made these comments addressing a joint media briefing with visiting Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer.

“I requested the Maldives to consider revisiting the current limit imposed on outward foreign currency remittances for the benefit of the Sri Lankan migrant workers in the Maldives,” Foreign Minister Ali Sabry said.

“I welcome the Maldives’ commitment to providing employment opportunities for Sri Lanka and express hope that the two countries would work on a government-to-government recruitment process,” he added.

During his maiden visit to Sri Lanka, Maldivian Foreign Minister Zameer is scheduled to pay courtesy calls to President Ranil Wickremesinghe later this evening and Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena on Thursday. (Newswire)
