President Ranil Wickremesinghe has raised the issue related to the President’s tenure in the 19th Amendment to the Constitution with the Cabinet of Ministers.
UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara said as per the 19th Amendment, the President’s tenure is stated as 5 years in one context and 6 years in another.
He further said that the President had submitted a proposal to the Cabinet last Monday to address the said issue.
“The proposal to correct the matter has been brought to the attention of the Cabinet. The necessary Bill will be presented to Parliament and is expected to be passed in Parliament soon,” he said.
Palitha Range Bandara added that claims on the possible postponement of the Presidential Election have arisen amidst this situation.
The UNP General Secretary made these remarks while addressing a public meeting in Medawachchiya today. (Newswire)
