Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has insisted that former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is the most suitable person to lead the Opposition in Sri Lanka.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, the Prime Minister said he did not think there was anyone other than Wickremesinghe who could represent the United National Party in Parliament.

He said politically speaking, Ranil Wickremesinghe is the suitable person, even though his presence is disadvantageous to the Government.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa further said he believes a strong opposition is always needed and the present opposition is not effective.

He pointed out that the earlier Joint Opposition was far more effective.

Commenting on the current Opposition, he said the split in the opposition is not a healthy sign for democracy.

He added that a strong opposition keeps a Government in check and forces it to deliver. (NewsWire)
