The Judicial Service Association of Sri Lanka (JSASL) has filed a contempt of court application in the Court of Appeal against State Minister Sanath Nishantha.
The application was filed by JSASL President Magistrate Prasanna Alwis and its Secretary Additional District Judge Pasan Manoj Amarasena yesterday.
The petitioners have named Sanath Nishantha as the respondent and are seeking an order to punish him for the offence of contempt of court over his statements to the media on 23rd August.
The Association points out that Sanath Nishantha has committed contempt of court via his statement pertaining to the court process of providing bail to suspects arrested in connection to Sri Lanka’s recent anti-government protests.
The JSASL said the State Minister had questioned the powers vested with magistrates and insulted the judiciary, which is considered an offence as per Article 105 (03) of the Constitution of Sri Lanka.
The Judicial Service Association of Sri Lanka is the sole organization representing all the District Court Judges and Magistrates in the country. (NewsWire)
