The Dean of the Arts Faculty of Peradeniya University, Dr. Prabath Ekanayake has revealed receiving death threats from a group of politically backed students of the university.
Dr. Ekanayake accused the President of the Student Union of threatening the professors, deans, as well as vice-chancellor with harsh words.
“The President of the Student Union threatened me stating, “We sent the seventh executive President home, you are not a big deal for us,” the Dean of the Arts Faculty of Peradeniya University revealed.
Stating that this was due to his attempts to protect the educational rights of all students of the university, Dr. Ekanayake said it is regrettable that the university was in such a serious and tragic situation.
The threats come after the teaching staff of the university had decided to suspend all academic activities at the Law Department of the Arts Faculty over a recent clash.
A group of students from the Arts faculty assaulted a group of law undergraduates in September, for opposing ragging, prompting serious action from the university administration.
The academic activities at the Law Department of the Arts Faculty have been suspended until the Student Union gives a written assurance on stopping assaults and abuse of a section of the students from the Law Department.
Online lectures which had been commenced following the suspension of physical academic activities have also now been suspended awaiting the written assurance of the students’ union.
The university administration has informed the student union that the relevant written assurance must be given in order to resume educational activities of the Arts Faculty. (NewsWire)
