A heated argument took place in Parliament today after Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera accused MP Dayasiri Jayasekera of failing to settle his electricity bills and continuing to occupy the government-provided house for ministers.
Minister Wijesekera said that MP Dayasiri Jayasekara has been residing in the official house provided for ministers despite having resigned from his ministerial portfolio.
The Energy Minister urged the MP to hand over the government-provided house if he is representing the opposition instead of misusing state property.
Responding to the Minister, MP Dayasiri Jayasekera accused him of leaking his electricity bills to the media, after he raised allegations over the malpractices linked to fuel imports.
Stating that the outstanding electricity charges do not contain usage by him alone, the MP said it also consists of usage by ministers who had previously resided in the said government bungalow.
MP Dayasiri Jayasekera also informed the Parliament that he has made repeated requests for the government to allocate a house provided for MPs as he does not reside in Colombo, and the government is yet to do so.
The MP pointed out that even though he has been requested to leave the current government-provided house as he is no longer a minister, Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa still resides in the official residence provided for ministers having resigned from his ministerial portfolio.
MP Jayasekera said not only MP Namal Rajapaksa, but several other Parliamentarians also still continue to reside in the official houses provided for ministers even though they have resigned from their portfolios. (NewsWire)
