A 23-year-old Web Designer from Habaraduwa has been arrested for financially defrauding the public under the guise of providing imported electronic equipment at cheaper prices.
According to the Daily News, the suspect was arrested on Wednesday (19) by the Digital Forensic Laboratory Officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Investigations have revealed that the suspect had attracted customers via Facebook posts claiming to sell several electronic equipments, including televisions, laptops, and mobile phones.
The Police said that the suspect is addicted to drugs and is reported to have earned Rs.5.6 million via his fake business operated in the last 06 months.
Stating that complaints of the fake business had been received in nearly 100 Police stations, the Police said the suspect had carried out the scam along with 12 of his friends who are also found to be addicted to drugs.
Further investigations are being conducted into the scam. (NewsWire)
