President Ranil Wickremesinghe has expressed his condolences to the Government of India and its people over the tragic collapse of a bridge in Gujarat in which over 130 people died on Sunday (30).
According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), the President said the Government and people of Sri Lanka, join him in extending their deepest condolences to the Government and people of India, especially the families of the citizens who lost their lives in the incident.
“Shocked and saddened by the tragic accident in Morbi, Gujarat, with the collapse of the bridge. May the injured have a speedy recovery and wish every success in the rescue and recovery operations underway,” President Ranil Wickremesinghe added.
At least 132 people died when a pedestrian suspension bridge on the Machchu river collapsed in India’s western state of Gujarat on Sunday.
The bridge in Morbi, which had been reopened just a week ago after repairs, had collapsed due to overcrowding as people celebrated the Diwali festival.
According to international media, most of those who died were women, children, or the elderly. (NewsWire)
