The Peliyagoda Police has launched an investigation into an incident of an officer of a private bank being scammed by an individual introduced on Facebook, under the guise of providing 10,000 Canadian dollars.
According to the Daily News, the Police said the suspect who had promised to provide 10,000 Canadian dollars had robbed Rs. 2.7 million from the bank officer in the Poson Watta area in Wanawasala, Kelaniya on Tuesday (01).
The bank officer had informed the Police that he had published an advertisement on Facebook requesting 10,000 Canadian dollars due to a shortage in the country, and the suspect had responded and agreed to provide the money for a rate of Rs. 275.
Thereafter, it was agreed to meet at a house in the Wanawasala area in Kelaniya, and upon arriving with his father at the house, two individuals attacked them and fled with the money.
However, while fleeing the suspects had dropped Rs. 30,000 on the floor which was retrieved by the bank officer.
The Police said investigations have revealed that the exchange of cash had been planned by a man addicted to drugs and he had brought the bank officer to a place that he had rented out for this purpose.
The Criminal Investigation Division of Peliyagoda Police has launched an investigation to arrest the main suspect involved in the robbery. (NewsWire)
