The Sri Lanka Police says the detention of an individual by the Talangama Police on Saturday in order to confirm his identity was carried out under the legal powers vested with the Police.
The Police have issued a statement to clarify details pertaining to the incident that occurred on Saturday (12) after it made rounds on social media over the weekend.
The Police said that during regular sting operations to apprehend those involved in various crimes in the country, the Police team had come across a man behaving suspiciously near the Talangama Bus Depot.
As the individual’s identity was unable to be confirmed at the time, as he was not carrying a National Identity Card (NIC) or any other document, the Police had acted to detain him and confirm his identity as per the powers vested with the Police Force.
The Police said, however, the man’s employer had arrived at the Police station and had confirmed his identity after which the man was immediately released.
The Police further urged the public to carry their NICs or any other documents to prove their identity to simplify the process in the event they encounter a similar scenario. (NewsWire)
