A sum of over Rs. 09 million rupees has been donated by current Parliamentarians for the late MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala who was killed during the public unrest in Sri Lanka in May.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe handed over the donation to the late Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP’s wife yesterday (14).
The handing over of the cash cheque was held during a meeting of the ruling party MPs at the Parliament complex. Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa were present during the occasion.
According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), a total of 183 Parliamentarians had contributed to the donation.
The ‘Madiwela Organization” consisting of 20 ruling party MPs living at the quarters provided to MPs in the Madiwela Housing Scheme commenced the collection of funds for this purpose.
Thereafter, several more MPs from the ruling party and the opposition had joined the movement and donated money. (NewsWire)
