The Police have fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse members of the Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF) who were engaged in a protest march in Colombo today.
The Police had taken measures to disperse the IUSF protesters near the Nelum Pokuna Theatre in Colombo, resulting in heavy traffic being reported in the area.
Despite the attempts by the Police to disperse the protesters, the protest march has reached the Welikada Prison in Borella.
The IUSF carried out a protest march calling for the release of its student leaders Wasantha Mudalige and Ven. Galwewa Siridamma Thero.
Mudalige and Ven. Siridamma Thero have been detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) for over 90 days for their participation in a protest in Colombo.
They were further remanded after being produced before the Colombo Additional Magistrate yesterday. (NewsWire)
