Several Opposition MPs raised questions in Parliament today on the special treatment provided to former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa upon his arrival in Sri Lanka.
Several politicians and high-ranking government officials were seen welcoming the former MP at the Katunayake airport on Sunday (20).
Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP S. M. Marikkar said they expect an explanation from the Leader of the Parliament on the special treatment provided to an individual who no longer holds any prominent government posts.
He questioned how Basil Rajapaksa, who is no longer a Parliamentarianor minister, was provided access to the VIP lounge and Police escort while leaving the airport.
Pointing out that the 21st Amendment to the Constitution proposes independent commissions, SJB MP Nalin Bandara revealed that the Chairman of the National Police Commission Chandra Fernando was also among those who had welcomed Basil Rajapaksa.
He questioned how the government intends to establish independent commissions when the Chief of such a commission is involved in welcoming a former minister, adding that such individuals are a hindrance to the establishment of independent commissions and the development of the nation. (NewsWire)
