The sale of eleven middle-class housing units built by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) has earned the government more than 500,000 US Dollars.
The inflow of dollars comes in the wake of Sri Lanka desperately trying to improve its foreign currency shortage.
The housing units sold are those provided at the Viyathpura Housing Scheme under the Government’s scheme to sell the UDA-built apartments for foreign currency to Sri Lankan migrant workers.
The UDA has earned more than US$ 500,000 by selling the eleven middle-class housing units at the Viyathpura Housing Scheme for foreign currency to Sri Lankan migrant workers.
According to the Daily News, Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said the UDA had targeted to raise US$ 500,000 from selling houses on dollar terms this year.
He further said, however, it has been able to exceed the target even before the end of this year.
As per the instructions of Minister Ranatunga, steps were taken to sell the middle-class houses built by the UDA on dollar terms to Sri Lankans residing and working abroad. They were also entitled to a 10% discount if the value of the houses was paid at once.
Accordingly, the first such house was sold to a Sri Lanka migrant worker in Dubai last September.
Minister Prasanna Ranatunga revealed that 11 houses were sold from the Viyathpura housing complex located in Pannipitiya and all the two-bedroom houses in the housing complex have been completely sold out as of now.
Sri Lankans living in Dubai, the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom, Oman, Qatar, and Fiji islands are reported to have bought these houses so far. In addition, the UDA has also received the application forms to buy eight more houses.
Minister Ranatunga added that the UDA has already prepared plans to generate an income of US$1.5 million in 2023 by selling the houses owned by the UDA to Sri Lankans working and residing abroad. (NewsWire)
