The ‘Glocal Fair-2023’ inaugural Programme will be held on February 25th and 26th in front of the entrance to the historic Jaffna Fort, Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara said today.
Speaking in Jaffna, the minister said that the ‘Glocal Fair’ will bring together government and private institutions under one roof which are involved in labour and employment matters related to both local and overseas.
It will be a One-Stop-Shop for the northern people, especially the youth to solve issues and get opportunities in the above-mentioned sectors, he added.
The Minister was speaking at a media briefing to announce plans regarding the Glocal Fair-2023’ slated to be held in Jaffna shortly.
The Minister addressing the media further said, “After the successful conclusion of the pilot project of ‘Glocal Fair 2022’ which was done as an experiment in the South, the inaugural ‘Glocal Fair 2023’ programme will be held in Jaffna shortly. Although it is the wish of all of us that the north and south should go together, the people of the north and especially the youth have been deprived of some opportunities.”
“I have to say that the way I feel about my native area is the same way I feel about Jaffna and the North. The attitude of the government led by the President is the same. It is useless to limit attitudes only to the mind or only to words. It should be shown in action and in a practical way. We came here to give the opportunity for young people in the north to get jobs, to solve people’s problems, to solve problems related to our ministry, and give solutions.”
“It is a problem if we cannot get rid of our bad traits even when we have fallen as far as we can as a country today. Politicians divided us. History shows that politics has divided and controlled us in all possible ways. Their petty needs were met. It happened in both the North and South. But now it’s time to put an end to it. We have come to the north to fulfil that duty.,” he said.
The minister further said, “Through ‘Glocal Fair 2023’we intend to address issues related to employment for jobs at home and abroad, proper referral for jobs at home and abroad, educate the people on what we are doing for Sri Lankan migrant workers, raising the quality of life for them and their children, training programmes, solving problems in the labour sector, etc. We will strive to give answers and solve issues in the above-related matters faced by northern people in the north itself without them having to go to Colombo.”
“As the Minister in charge of Human Resources and as the Minister of Labour, boundaries such as North and South are irrelevant to me when solving issues faced by the youth. My wish is to help them have a successful life in line with their dreams. That is why we have chosen Jaffna for the inaugural ‘Glocal Fair 2023’ This will be held on the 25th and 26th of February in front of the entrance to the historic Jaffna Fort,” Minister Nanayakkara said
