A road sweeper has been arrested in connection to the recent incident of a hand grenade being found inside a polythene bag hung on a tree near a 154 bus stop on Bauddaloka Mawatha, between Galle Road and Duplication Road.
The Police stated that the grenade was found on 2nd January after the cleaner himself had informed the Bambalapitiya Police of having found it inside a polythene bag hung on a tree.
However, investigations into the incident had revealed that the man himself had placed the grenade inside the bag on the tree and had also informed the Police.
The Police said the man had confessed that he had travelled from Moranthuduwa to Colombo for employment and had found an iron ball on the road which he had picked up to be sold as scrap metal.
However, a co-worker had informed him that it was a hand grenade after which he had placed it near the bus stop on Bauddhaloka Mawatha.
The Police stated that the 65-year-old man will be further questioned and may be handed over to the Terrorism Investigation Division for further investigations. (NewsWire)
