A small European hotel has attracted the world’s attention for its most unique and one-of-a-kind experience.
According to Times Now, a small, family-run hotel, ‘Hotel Arbez Franco-Suisse’ also called ‘L’Arbézie’ offers you the experience of ‘sleeping in two different countries at the same time’.
Turns out, the hotel happens to sit right on top of an international border between France and Switzerland.
The 1862 Treaty of Dappes is the reason behind this rather peculiar setting.
According to the treaty, France and Switzerland agreed on a small territory swap to allow full French control of a nearby road.
A provision was given in the treaty for any buildings along the border to remain in place, which opened new horizons for cross-border trade.
The hotel, which opened in 1921, has half of its building in France and the other half in Switzerland, with the international border bisecting the restaurant and several of the rooms.
The invisible international border runs right through the bed and bathroom of one of the rooms. If a guest happens to sleep in said room, they may do so with their head in Switzerland and legs in France.
A window in the said room gives the view of the two border posts just a few yards away, the Swiss one on the right side, and the French one a little further down on the left, with the hotel built on a triangular plot of land wedged between the two. (NewsWire)
