The depression over Sri Lanka has moved away from the country and thereby it is expected that its impact on the Island’s weather will lessen from today, the Department of Meteorology reported.
The Met Department stated that showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern, Eastern and Uva provinces and in the Polonnaruwa district.
Showers or thundershowers will occur elsewhere during the afternoon or night. A few showers are likely in the Southern Province in the morning too.
However, fairly heavy showers of above 50mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-Western, Uva and Southern provinces.
The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers
Meanwhile, the Naval and fishing communities have been requested to be vigilant while engaging in marine activities in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Matara via Mannar, Puttalam and Colombo.
The Met Department stated that several spells of showers will occur in the sea areas off the coast extending from Batticaloa to Pottuvil, while showers or thundershowers will occur in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo during the afternoon or night.
Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be 25-35 kmph. Wind speed may increase up to 40-50 kmph at times off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Matara via Mannar Puttalam and Colombo.
The sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Matara via Mannar Puttalam and Colombo will be fairly rough at times. The other sea area around the island will be moderate.
