Centenary Movement, a non-partisan body with the vision of engaging a new generation at the core of national decision-making in Sri Lanka, has contributed 55 young leaders to national politics in view of Sri Lanka’s 75th Independence Day.

In a statement, the Centenary Movement stated, “even though it has been 75 years since independence, we have not lived up to our potential as a nation. On the contrary young Sri Lankans have inherited a nation at the edge of bankruptcy, embroiled in corruption, nepotism and a toxic political culture. The nation is desperate for a new generation of leaders, to usher in economic transformation, national unity and a just and thriving nation.

Centenary Movement through its political academy is committed to producing leaders of Character, Competence, Compassion and Clarity of Vision to lead our nation. Each year on independence day we seek to platform new graduates  – a new generation of political leaders representing every district of Sri Lanka.

As the Centenary Movement, we have identified that educated, intelligent and compassionate young leaders are necessary for transformation to be realised. Having donated two cohorts to Sri Lankan politics, over 100 graduates in two years as an academy and four years as a national movement, we are committed to producing more such leaders in the next 25 years in the lead-up to our nation’s Centenary of Independence. Leaders who will refuse to make the same mistakes of the past, and ensure Sri Lanka can celebrate victories and incredible heights as a nation, rather than squirm in mediocrity, it said.

The Centenary Movement further said, “Today we celebrate the young leaders of the second cohort who completed 52 weeks of practical and theoretical training at our Academy. We also welcome the third cohort of our academy as they embark on this exciting journey. We are honoured by the presence of the former chairman of the Election Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya as our chief guest.”

This occasion will be held on the 4th of February (Independence Day) from 2 pm to 4 pm at the premises of the Center for Banking Studies in Rajagiriya.
