The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has complained to the United Nations Office in Sri Lanka over the unconstitutional attempts by the Sri Lanka Government to postpone the Local Government Elections.
In a letter addressed to the UN Office in Sri Lanka, SJB MP Rajakaruna said in terms of the law, the Local Government Elections in Sri Lanka should be held before the 20th of March, before which date the new councils should be established.
The Election Commission has called for nominations for the Local authorities and the election is scheduled to be held on the 9th of March 2023.
The election campaigns of the candidates have commenced and there is enthusiasm among the people of Sri Lanka to exercise their franchise in the forthcoming elections, he said.
The MP further said that, however, having realized that the public opinions of the government are very much unfavourable for the Government, the President who is also the finance minister has issued certain circulars and the Cabinet has taken certain decisions in order to disrupt the process of holding the elections by the Election Commissions as scheduled on the 9th of March.
The SJB MP pointed out that the Executive is acting unconstitutionally to deprive the people of their franchise violating the fundamental rights of the Sri Lankan people and blatantly violating the sacred provisions of the Constitution.
“Therefore, we humbly request your good office to intervene in this matter to safeguard the rights of the people of Sri Lanka,” he concluded. (NewsWire)
