The Grandpass Police have commenced an investigation into the abduction of the owner of a chain of building material stores by a group that had impersonated officers of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
According to Daily News, the victim, who is the owner of several building material shops in Messenger Street, Colombo 12 and Kandy, had been released only after handing over a ransom of Rs. 7 million to the suspects.
The Grandpass Police have launched an investigation based on a complaint filed by the businessman, who revealed that he had been abducted near a Church in Grandpass on 10th February.
In his complaint, the victim stated that two men on a motorcycle had blocked his path claiming to be from the CID and had taken him in a van in which there were three other men.
The group had blindfolded the businessman and taken him to a house in which they had threatened him with a knife demanding Rs. 10 million but had later demanded Rs. 7 million as a ransom for his release.
The businessman had paid Rs. 7 million to the suspects with the help of a friend after which he had been released near the Dematagoda Railway Grounds.
Filing his complaint, the businessman has stated that he had delayed seeking the assistance of the Police due to threats from the suspects. (NewsWire)
