Water tariffs will have to be increased in the near future, Minister of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development Jeevan Thondaman said.
According to Mawbima Newspaper, Minister Thondaman pointed out that the water tariff will have to be hiked due to electricity tariffs being increased recently.
Thondaman stated that the increase was due to a number of water supply pumping systems being reliant on electricity from the main grid.
He further stated that thereby, the expenditure on water supply operations has significantly increased due to an increase in electricity tariffs.
“Measures are being taken to introduce solar power for water-related projects following the signing of the financial deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF),” he said.
Minister Jeevan Thondaman insisted that the water bill will see a reduction following this agreement.
The minister made that remarks during a public rally held in Matale yesterday (19). (NewsWire)
