The National Election Commission says preparations are underway to hold the postal vote of the Local Government Election from 28th- 31st March 2023.
Chairman of the Commission Nimal G. Punchihewa stated that steps are being taken to hold the postal vote on the said dates.
The National Election Commission yesterday announced that the most suitable date to hold the Local Government polls was the 25th of April 2023.
Even though the elections were earlier announced to be held on 09th March 2023, it was postponed, with the Commission citing a lack of funds.
The Supreme Court had also issued an interim order preventing the Finance Ministry’s Secretary and the Attorney General from withholding the funds allocated for election purposes under the 2023 budget.
The Election Commission met with key government stakeholders, such as the Police, and the Government Printers Department yesterday, with the Treasury Secretary a noticeable absentee.
The date for the Local Government polls has been announced pending the relevant gazette, which is expected soon. (NewsWire)
