Angelo Mathews surpasses Sanath Jayasuriya as Sri Lanka’s third-highest run-scorer in Test cricket
Angelo Mathews has made history by becoming Sri Lanka’s third-highest run-scorer in Test cricket, surpassing the legendary Sanath Jayasuriya. Mathews achieved the feat during the first Test match against New Zealand on Thursday.
Mathews, who made his Test debut in 2009, went past Jayasuriya’s tally of 6,973 runs in 110 Tests.
The 35-year-old all-rounder is now behind only Kumar Sangakkara (12,400 runs) and Mahela Jayawardene (11,814 runs) in the list of Sri Lanka’s highest run-scorers in Test cricket.
Mathews’ achievement is a testament to his longevity and consistency in the longest format of the game. He has been a stalwart of the Sri Lankan cricket team for more than a decade and has contributed immensely with both bat and ball.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka opener Dimuth Karunaratne also went pass Sanath Jayasuriya’s record for most runs as a Sri Lankan Test opener. Dimuth Karunaratne went pass Sanath Jayasuriya’s 5932 runs tally as an opener for Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
