An islandwide strike action has been launched by trade unions of several essential services sectors, including health, ports, power, water, railways, postal, and banks today (15).
The strike action has been launched over several demands, including the government’s new tax policy and the recent hike in electricity tariffs.
According to reports, doctors, nurses and other health staff of several state hospitals across the country have joined the strike action.
Teachers and Principals of schools across the nation, and ports and Railway employees have also joined the strike action.
However, several office trains had operated from Galle to Colombo- Fort despite the ongoing strike action.
Reports state that the Military and Police have been deployed for security at the railway stations. (NewsWire)
