Sri Lankan female migrant workers who travel overseas via illegal means will not be provided shelter at the safety houses of the Sri Lankan diplomatic missions overseas from 1st April 2023.
The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) said in a statement that women who travel overseas via fraudulent agencies and without registering with the SLBFE will not be provided safe shelter by the diplomatic missions.
The SLBFE stated initially the overseas diplomatic missions had provided safety houses to assist Sri Lankan female migrant workers who had faced various issues in their employment.
However, as there was an increase in Sri Lankan female migrant workers who had travelled via illegal agencies and without registering with the SLBFE facing issues the diplomatic missions provided safety shelters and other assistance.
The SLBFE stated that this was provided in a bid to curtail the number of Sri Lankan female migrant workers travelling overseas via illegal employment agencies and non-registration with the SLBFE.
However, the assistance by way of safety shelters and other needs will be suspended for those travelling overseas unlawfully for employment to encourage only those following the legal means for overseas employment, it added. (NewsWire)
