The government will introduce new laws to regulate ayurvedic spas in Sri Lanka, State Minister of Indigenous Medicine Industry Sisira Jayakody said.

The State Minister revealed that several ayurvedic spas in the country are found to be operating as brothels.

Stating that the ayurvedic spas are required to be registered with the local councils and are not subject to supervision, he stated that some are not registered with the council or even the Tourism Board as required.

State Minister Sisira Jayakody further stated that many of the ayurvedic therapists found at the spas are untrained which has caused serious concerns.

As a result, the Ayurveda Department has introduced a new four-month course leading to a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 4 certification for those who are interested in becoming Ayurvedic therapists, he added. (NewsWire)
