The Fort Police has been ordered to investigate the alleged theft of Rs. 5 million from a safe at the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, to arrest the suspects involved, and produce them in court.
Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawala issued the order yesterday (17) after taking into consideration the facts presented by the Fort Police on the complaint filed by the Superintendent of the Forensic Finance Department of the Central Bank, S.R. Dayananda.
The Fort Police informed the court that the complaint had been received on 11th April after which an investigation had been launched and statements had been recorded from six persons from one department.
Stating that more statements may be recorded in the future, the Police also informed the court that an investigation team has been deployed to the Central Bank to conduct a probe to examine fingerprints, surveillance evidence, and CCTV footage.
As per the complaint by the Central Bank authorities, a sum of Rs. 5 million, which consisted of thousand notes of Rs. 5000, was reported missing.
The cash is reported to have been placed in an underground vault equipped with security cameras and modern technology at the Central Bank. (NewsWire)
