A minor tremor with a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter Scale has been reported in Hambantota, Sri Lanka.
The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau stated that the minor tremor was reported 25.8 kilometres off Hambantota at around 12.45 am today.
Stating that there were no tsunami threats to Sri Lanka, the Bureau further stated that there was no reason for the public to panic.
A minor tremor was last reported in Hambantota on 24th August 2022, measuring a magnitude of 2.0 on the Richter Scale.
In 2023, minor tremors have been continuously reported in Sri Lanka on several occasions since February.
A 3.0 magnitude tremor on the Richter scale was reported from the Wellawaya, Buttala, and Handapanagala areas on 10th February.
Another minor tremor of magnitude 2.3 on the Richter scale was reported in Buttala, Wellawaya area on 11th February.
On 22nd February, a minor earth tremor of magnitude 3.2 on the Richter Scale was felt around Buttala.
In March, a minor tremor was reported in Trincomalee, Gomarankadawala with a magnitude of 3 on the Richter scale and another tremor in Kirinda with a magnitude of 2.6 on the Richter scale on 19th March.
