The Department of Meteorology says showers or thundershowers are expected in several parts of Sri Lanka later today.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Sabaragamuwa, Central, NorthCentral, Uva and North-Western provinces and in Trincomalee and Mullaitivu districts during the afternoon or night.

Fairly heavy showers above 50mm are likely in some places. Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places elsewhere during the afternoon or night.

The department stated that showers may occur in the Galle and Matara districts during the morning too.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the other sea area around the island at night.

Winds will be south-easterly over the sea area around the island and wind speed will be 20-30 kmph.

The sea areas around the island will be slight to moderate. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (NewsWire)
