Former Member of Parliament J. Sri Ranga was granted bail on May 3, 2023, after being accused of participating in a protest that led to the torching of President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s private residence in Colombo on July 9, 2022.

Ranga was ordered to pay a cash bail of Rs. 20,000 and two surety bails of Rs. 5 million each. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had named Ranga as a suspect in the case, alleging that he had actively participated in the protest and aided and abetted in the damage to the property.

Ranga is in remand custody now for allegedly influencing the witnesses of a fatal traffic accident in Vavuniya in 2011.
