Showers or thundershowers will occur over most parts of Sri Lanka after 1.00 pm today, the Department of Meteorology stated.
Thereby, showers will occur in the Western and Northwestern provinces and in the Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Galle and Matara districts in the morning.
Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in the Eastern, Uva, North-Central and North-western provinces and fairly heavy showers about 50 mm are likely at some places elsewhere.
Strong winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times over western and Southern coastal areas.
The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Meanwhile, a low-level disturbance is likely to develop over the Southeast Bay of Bengal from Saturday, 06th May, onwards.
The fishing and naval community are requested to be attentive to future forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.
The department stated that showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas around the island.
Winds will be south-westerly over the sea area around the island and wind speed will be 20-30 kmph.
Wind speed may increase up to 40-45 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Beruwala to Hambanthota via Galle and Matara.
The sea areas off the coast extending from Beruwala to Hambanthota via Galle and Matara will be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be slight to moderate.
Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (NewsWire)
