On April 30th, a 32-year-old woman died in a motor accident near the Niyagama Divisional Secretariat office on the Elpitiya-Pitigala Mapalagama main road.
Recently, her husband was arrested for allegedly convincing a friend of his to cause the accident.
Police say that the suspect had reportedly promised his friend a sum of Rs 2 million to stage the accident.
The victim had returned to Sri Lanka after being employed abroad for some time, and had four life insurance policies worth Rs 5 million in her name.
The suspect had planned the accident with his friend in order to obtain the insurance payout.
The victim was waiting on the road for her relative, who had gone to attend to a matter on a motorcycle, when she was run over by a lorry.
She was hospitalized in critical condition and later died from her injuries.
The lorry driver, who is believed to be the suspect’s friend, fled the scene and is currently being sought by the police.
