Two employees of the Katunayake Airport have been arrested for stealing 14 gemstones that were to be transported via airmail from Sri Lanka to Sydney, Australia.
The Police stated that the gemstones were handed over to the airport by the Central Mail Exchange and were to be transported to Australia on April 26, 2023.
A complaint has been filed with the Australian Federal Police in this regard after which an investigation was launched by the Katunayake Airport Police.
The Police said CCTV footage at the airmail storage room at the airport had revealed two employees stealing the gemstones.
The suspects were arrested by the Airport Police yesterday (May 14), while the stolen gemstones had also been recovered.
The suspects are aged 23 and 25 years and are residents of Tholangamuwa and Hasalaka. They will be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court today. (NewsWire)
