The 51-year-old man who was arrested over the death of a five-year-old boy in Halbarawa, Mulleriyawa has confessed to having caused the child’s death.
The Police stated that the man had revealed that he had been cutting grass using a machine during which time the blade had accidentally come into contact with the child.
The suspect further said that the child had fallen due to the impact and had died due to the injury.
He revealed that out of fear he had set up the scene to seem like the child had died due to injuries sustained by falling onto a broken glass.
The Police said the man had confessed following intense interrogation following his arrest yesterday.
Investigations have revealed that the child who resides with his grandparents had opted to spend time with the suspect who was working at the construction site at which his grandfather was a caretaker.
The child had requested to stay with the suspect instead of a neighbouring house as the grandfather was set to embark on another journey on the day of the incident.
The body of the child with cut wounds was recovered from the construction site in the Halbarawa area on Thursday evening.
The Mulleriya Police found the body after receiving information via the police emergency hotline 119, now found to have been made by the suspect himself.
The deceased is a 05-year-old resident of the Malambe area in Halbarawa.
Investigations have revealed that the child was in the custody of his grandparents, as his parents are separated and the mother is employed overseas. (NewsWire)
