An individual has been arrested for defrauding over Rs. 100 million from aspirant job seekers by promising jobs in European countries, the Mirihana Police stated.
According to the Mirihana Police Headquarters, over 50 individuals have been scammed by the suspect.
Investigations had been launched after a victim had filed a complaint with the Police claiming that the suspect had obtained a payment of between Rs. 500,000 to Rs. 1 million promising jobs in Canada, the Netherlands or Switzerland.
The victim had stated that after receiving the money the suspect had delayed the process for over 1 ½ years providing various reasons.
The Police stated that over 15 complaints have been received against the suspect at the Mirihana Police Headquarters alone.
Investigations have found that the suspect had defrauded the public in this manner in several areas, while over 30 complaints have been received against the suspect at Police stations in various parts of Sri Lanka.
The Mirihana Police arrested the suspect at his residence in Madiwela, Mirihana based on a tip-off. (NewsWire)
