Sixteen motorcycles have been taken into Police custody on charges of having been ridden in a reckless manner on the Weliwita Wewa Road in Kaduwela last evening.
The Police stated that the group was apprehended following a tip-off to the Police officers of the Kaduwela station who were engaged in motor traffic duty.
The youths were found to be speeding and racing in the motorcycles, with some one-wheeling and without helmets.
The group had disregarded Police orders to stop and had sped away, after which the officers had chased after them and took into custody 16 motorcycles.
The suspects aged between 18 to 26 years have been identified as residents of Wellampitiya, Mulleriyawa, Angoda, Malabe, and Kelanimulla.
The group has been instructed to appear before the Kaduwela Magistarte’s Court tomorrow (July 18).
