A Sri Lankan lifeguard lost his life while attempting to rescue a Russian couple who had been swept away while bathing in the Waskaduwa Sea in Kalutara last afternoon.
A group of youths had managed to save four persons including the Russian couple who had been swept away while sea bathing.
The lifeguard who lost his life in the incident has been identified as a 36-year-old resident of Kalutara North. He was employed as a lifeguard for a hotel in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the lifeguard had jumped into the sea after hearing the Russian woman calling out for help. However, while swimming he had been swept away by a sudden wave.
Thereafter, two employees of the hotel had also ventured into the sea to help save those drowning but they too had been swept away. (NewsWire)
