The case filed against MP Patali Champika Ranawaka pertaining to an accident in Rajagiriya in 2016 has been postponed to September by the Colombo High Court.
According to Ada Derana, the case filed by the Attorney General was taken up for hearing before Colombo High Court Judge Namal Balalle today.
MP Ranawaka appeared before the court today, during which his lawyer informed that his client has filed an appeal before the Supreme Court in relation to another similar case which is the basis of this case.
The lawyer stated that the Supreme Court has issued an interim to suspend the proceedings before the High Court.
The lawyer further revealed that the defendant has also filed another appeal before the Court of Appeal in relation to the said case.
Taking into consideration the facts, the Colombo High Court postponed the case to September 23, 2023.
A case was filed against MP Ranawaka for allegedly critically injuring a motorcyclist in an accident involving his Jeep in Rajagiriya in 2016.
The MP, who had reportedly fled the scene, had produced his driver in court as the driver of the vehicle at the time of the accident.
MP Ranawaka was later arrested and remanded in December 2019 over the accident on the instructions of the Attorney General but was later released on bail.
The AG thereafter filed indictments against the MP for causing grievous injury to a person by rash and negligent acts and other charges over the accident. (NewsWire)
