A new housing project for Sri Lankan migrant workers employed overseas is being devised by the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) together with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBE), it was reported.
According to Ada Derana, a joint proposal is due to be presented before the Cabinet by the Minister of Urban Development and Housing Prasanna Ranatunga and Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanyakkara for the project which will be carried out by the NHDA and financed by the SLBFE.
As per the project proposal, the two state institutions have offered three options under which the houses can be constructed.
“A house can be built on land owned by the migrant worker. In the event they do not own such land, the house will be built on a piece of land owned by the state, outside of urban areas. And thirdly, the establishment of an apartment complex,” the NHDA reported.
The NHDA and SLBFE have already commenced necessary measures pertaining to the housing project, with the SLBFE having received over 1,000 applications in response to a survey conducted to assess the housing needs of migrant workers and the NHDA also seeking information at the district level in this regard.
