Dambulla Aura has topped the Lanka Premier League (LPL) group stage with 12 points winning six matches from the 8 group games they played.
The LPL franchise which failed to qualify after being at the bottom of the points table last year has turned the tables topping the LPL league group stage this year.
Dambulla Aura has reached the feat with the leadership of Kusal Mendis and the mentoring of former cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya as the Head of Cricket.
Sanath Jayasuriya who headed the Kandy Franchise last year was instrumental in getting Kandy to win the group stages last year as well after being knocked out in previous editions.
Although Kandy could not win the trophy last year they had a spectacular season last year winning 7 out of 8 games.
Speaking to reporters, Sanath Jayasuriya said that this year he would hope that the Dambulla boys will go all the way to win the tournament.
“With Kandy, we were not able to win the tournament though we did well last year, so I hope we can go all the way this time.”
“Dambulla didn’t qualify for the playoffs last year and we built this team from scratch, so happy how the players performed, but we have a big challenge next in the playoffs,” Jayasuriya said.
Meanwhile, the Lanka Premier League will see a key knockout clash today (Aug 15) between Galle Titans and Colombo Strikers.
The winner of the clash will join the final four of the LPL, joining Dambulla Aura, B-Love Kandy and the Jaffna Kings.
If play is called off due to rain today, then Colombo Strikers and Galle Titans will qualify, while Jaffna Kings will be eliminated. (NewsWire)
