A former member of the Ganga Ihala Korale Pradeshiya Sabha has been sentenced to two months of rigorous imprisonment on charges of driving a motorcycle under the influence of alcohol.
According to Lankadeepa, the Gampola Magistrate had also imposed a fine of Rs. 75,000 on the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) member who had pleaded guilty to the offence.
The SLPP member is reported to have avoided the courts since 2018 after which three warrants had been issued against him leading to his arrest by the Police.
The Police had initially filed a case after apprehending the suspect for having ridden a motorcycle without a licence, revenue licence, or insurance in 2018.
As the SLPP member had pleaded not guilty to the offence at the time, court proceedings had commenced on the case.
But, as the suspect had avoided courts, warrants had been issued and the case had proceeded for a period of five years.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that the motorcycle was issued to be provided for Samurdhi beneficiaries and the suspect does not possess a valid licence to date.
Taking into consideration the facts presented in court, the suspect was sentenced to two months of rigorous imprisonment. (NewsWire)
