The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has issued an Amber Alert for flood warnings to several areas of Sri Lanka, effective for the next 24 hours, commencing at 11 am today.
The DMC warned that there is a possibility of a minor or considerable flood situation in lowline areas of the Gin Ganga.
Floods could occur in the Welivitiya, Divithura, Baddegama, Niyagama, Neluwa, Thawalama, Nagoda, Elpitiya and Bope – Poddala D/S Divisions, the DMC said.
Residents and motorists in the said areas have been requested to remain vigilant in this regard.
The flood warnings have been issued due to the prevalent rainy weather conditions experienced in the country.
The Department of Meteorology expects the prevailing showery condition in south-western part of the Island to continue further.
Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and in the Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts today.
Fairly heavy showers above 75mm can be expected at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle, Matara and Puttalam districts.
A few showers will occur in the Northern province and in the Anuradhapura district.
Fairly strong winds about 40-45 kmph can be expected at times in western slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces and in the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the evening or night. (NewsWire)
