A Maulavi from a mosque in the Kattankudy 06 area has been arrested on charges of having physically assaulted a minor with a wooden pole.
The Police said the Maulavi had physically assaulted an 08-year-old child while conducting lessons at the mosque on Saturday night (Oct 28).
The Maulavi was arrested based on a complaint filed with the Kattankudy Police in this regard.
The injured child who was initially admitted to the Kattankudy Hospital has been transferred to the Batticaloa Hospital for treatment.
The Maulavi has been identified as a 40-year-old resident of the Kattankudy 06 area.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the Maulavi had physically assaulted the child for having failed to memorise a lesson assigned as classwork.
The Kattanakudy Police is conducting investigations into the incident. (NewsWire)
