The government has assured Postal employees that the iconic Post Office building in Nuwara Eliya will not be damaged while implementing an investment project.

State Minister of Mass Media Shantha Bandara told the media yesterday (Nov 09), that a request had been made by the postal employees to ensure the protection of the building.

State Minister Bandara said that the government has agreed to the request, adding that the Archaeology Department has declared that the building built in 1894 is of archaeological value.

The postal workers had also requested the authorities to implement the investment project while allowing them to carry out their services from the building, to which the government has agreed, he further said.

Assuring that necessary steps have been taken to protect the building during the investment project, State Minister Bandara urged the postal employees to report to duty.

Postal employees had launched a trade union action after it was reported that the government had decided to provide the iconic Post office buildings in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya for investment projects in the tourism sector.

Earlier this week, Cabinet spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena announced that the iconic Post office building in Nuwara Eliya was to be handed over to India’s Taj Samudra Hotel for a hotel project. (NewsWire)
