The Met Department says the low-level atmospheric disturbance over the island persists. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times over most parts of the island today. Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Northern, North-Western, North-central and Eastern provinces.
Weather forecast for sea areas :
Showers or thundershowers will occur in several places around the island’s sea areas. Winds will be North-easterly or variable in direction and wind speed will be 20-30 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 40-45 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanthurai. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
Balangoda Earth slip:
Four persons from the same family who were trapped in an earth slip in the Wehintenna area in Gawarahena, Balangoda last night are yet to be found. The Police told NewsWire that three houses had been damaged due to the earth slip which had occurred due to the heavy rains experienced in the area. One house had been completely trapped under the earth slip, in which a couple and their two daughters had been at the time of the incident. The Police and Army are deployed in the area and are engaged in a rescue operation. (NewsWire)
