The showery weather condition is expected to enhance over Sri Lanka due to an atmospheric disturbance over the Southeast Bay of Bengal Sea area, while the North-East monsoon is gradually getting established over the island, the Department of Meteorology said.
Therefore, showers or thundershowers will occur in the Northern, Eastern, Southern, North-central and Uva provinces today.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in other provinces of the island after 01.00 p.m. Heavy showers of about 100 mm are likely at some places in the Eastern, Central, Uva and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.
Meanwhile, a low-pressure area has developed over the south Andaman Sea and the adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal.
It is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal around Thursday (Nov 30), while it will further develop into a cyclonic storm.
The fishing and naval community have been requested to remain vigilant in this regard. Accordingly, showers or thundershowers will occur in several places around the island’s sea areas today.
Winds will be North-easterly. Wind speed will be 30-40 kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Kankasanthura and from Galle to Hambantota via Matara. Wind speed will be 20-30 kmph in the other sea areas around the island.
The sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Kankasanthurai and from Galle to Hambantota via Matara will be moderate and slight in the other sea areas around the island. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (NewsWire)
