The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for heavy rains and strong winds effective until 10.00 am tomorrow (Dec 02).
The department said the low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal has developed into a depression and is likely to intensify into a deep depression by tomorrow, while it is expected to further develop into a cyclonic storm by Sunday (Dec 03).
This system is likely to move west-northwestwards closer to the northern coast of Sri Lanka towards the North Tamil Nadu coast.
Under the influence of the above system, showery and windy weather can be expected in Northern and Northcentral provinces and Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts. Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in the above areas.
Strong winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times over the Northern, Northcentral and Northwestern provinces and in Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts. (NewsWire)
